I was feeling fit, but I was feeling like I had plateaued and I was starting to get bored. I read an article called “Everything You Know About Fitness Is a Lie” by Daniel Duane in which he promotes going back to basics with the four essential lifts (dead lifts, squats, presses, pull-ups). I was interested in weight training on the four basic lifts, but I have no prior experience with weight lifting and I was worried that I might injure myself if I started doing these lifts with heavy weights without expert help.
My initial goal was to learn how to do the four basic lifts with good form and to improve my strength. I never expected to be able to dead-lift my own body weight in less than three months!

I find myself constantly using the techniques and form I have been taught in my everyday life. I have two young children who love to be picked up, cuddled, and carried. When my first daughter was a young (heavy) baby I pulled a vertebra out of alignment in my upper back by carrying her for hours every day. By strengthening my back and shoulders, and by using the correct form when lifting and holding my children I have healed my back. I love to go cross-country skiing in the winter and canoe tripping in the summer. It is important to me to maintain a level of strength and fitness as I age that allows me to continue to do the things that I love in comfort and with confidence.
I have developed a greater sense of proprioception through my training process. Hussein always tells me not to look in the mirror and to develop a greater awareness of my body. It works!
The key for me is to avoid injury in the first place. By being stronger, by using the correct form when lifting heavy weights, and by developing a greater awareness of how my body moves, I am reducing my risk of injury. Exercise is very important to my mental well being. I often go to the gym during the work-day as a mid-day break when I feel like my brain is shutting down and the blood is congealing in my legs. After a session at the gym, I come back to work feeling refreshed and energetic.

Whenever I have felt a muscle tighten up or some soreness during a workout, Hussein has always stopped the workout right away, worked hard to address the pain, and articulated a plan for a safely continuing to exercise without injury. I never feel like his attention wanders during our sessions, and his attention to small details in my form is incredible.
